Multi-drop - a single journey during which deliveries are to different locations.

Multi-modal - the use of various forms of transport (more than two) to move goods (see Bi-modal, Intermodal).

Network Operation - a transport system which may include a number of co-operating companies organised to form a formal distribution pattern.

Nominees - third party haulage / distribution contractors working as the nominated transporter for an organisa-tion i.e. with vehicles dedicated to that organisation, often painted with their livery.

Open Top Container - container with a removable roof, either rigid or soft. Usually used to facilitate heavy, bulky or awkward loads.

Out of Gauge - Cargo which either protrudes from a container or break bulk cargo shipped in a container whose dimensions are larger than the standard container size.

Piggyback - the carrying of an unaccompanied semi-trailer on a specially designed rail wagon.

Pre-entry - Certain goods require to be declared to HM Customs prior to packing or shipment in order that control may be exercised over restricted goods and that checks may be made where rebate scheme such as In-ward processing Relief are in operation.

Reefer/Refrigerated Box - A refrigerated container, trailer or vehicle.

Removal Note - A document issued by HM Customs as evidence that imported goods have been cleared and are free to be removed from the port on arrival.

Road Haulage Association (RHA) - Association set up to represent the commercial transport interests of the road haulage industry in such areas as Training, Legal matters, Environmental issues, transportation of hazard-ous goods, National & International transport issues etc....

Road-Railer - brand name for system whereby a specially designed road trailer is transformed into a rail wagon by attaching it to custom made bogies.

Rolling Stock - general term used to denote railway wagons or carriages.

Roll On/Roll Off Vessel - (RORO) vessel carrying road vehicles and trailers via doors in the bow or stern.
