Terms of sale - Incoterms 2000

Term Meaning Sellers responsibilities Buyers responsibilities
EXW Ex Works Ensure goods are available to the buyer at the seller's works or warehouse. Sold at invoice cost. No cargo insurance required. Pays the invoice price and must arrange carriage and insurance from works/warehouse to final destination.
FOB Free on Board Seller must deliver the goods on board the vessel free of risk and expense to the buyer.

Must provide a clean on board receipt from the carrier and pass to buyer.

Pay loading charges not included in the freight

Arrange export clearance
Assumes risk and expense from ship's rail onwards.

Needs to insure goods from this point until final delivery.
CFR Cost and Freight As FOB but must Contract for carriage and freight costs to final destination.

Provide a clean bill of Lading or Sea Waybill

Pay for unloading costs if for his account under the Contract of Carriage
As FOB except buyer does not pay for carriage and freight costs. Directly but reimburses the seller who includes these in the commercial invoice.

Needs to insure goods from FOB until final delivery.
CIF Cost, Insurance and Freight As CFR but must contract for Cargo Insurance

Arrange insurance from works/warehouse of seller to final delivery and Provide the buyer with a Certificate or Policy of Insurance
Once documents have been accepted and thus title to the goods. The Buyer accepts the risk from the time the goods are loaded on board vessel. The buyer can claim against the Insurance document which has been assigned to him for losses occurring after the FOB point until final delivery.

Cargo Insurance - Seller

EXW - No insurance needs to be arranged by the seller but Sellers Interest Contingency Risks Insurance is recommended.
FOB - Insurance is required from works/warehouse until on board vessel. SICR Insurance is recommended.
CFR - As FOB above
CIF - Arrange insurance from works/warehouse to final destination.

FAS Free Alongside Ship DEQ Delivered ex-Quay

CIP Carriage and Insurance Paid to DDP Delivered Duty Paid
DAF Delivered at Frontier
